Types of Acne Scars
Some acne scars are permanent and some will disappear over time. Acne scars may appear as:
1. Macules. These are flat, red spots where an acne lesion was once located. They can last for weeks and then fade on their own.
2. Skin Discoloration. Sometimes healing acne scars can cause skin discoloration, which is also known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. After acne lesions heal, skin discoloration can last for several months.
3. Tissue scars. Some types of acne can leave scars that increase with tissue. These acne scars, which may be called keloids or hypertrophic scars, are caused by excessive production of collagen in the skin.
4. Organizational loss. More common than bulging tissue scars are acne scars, which are caused by tissue loss. These acne scars are called ice scars, depressed fibrotic scars, soft scars, atrophic macula or follicular macular atrophy. They look concave and look like small pits on the skin.
How does it work?
Common scar removal treatments include:
1. Dermabrasion. This is a very effective treatment for scar removal, using a high-speed brush or other tools to resurface the skin to remove or reduce the depth of the scar. You usually need a few days to recover.

Depending on the strength of the acid used, you may feel red and peeling after a few days.
4. Laser. Your dermatologist can use a laser to remove the outer layers of your skin, and the contoured areas of acne scars, or reduce the redness around the acne lesions. Different types of lasers are used, depending on whether the acne scar is raised or flat. More than one type of laser treatment may be required, depending on the laser used, you may need a few days to heal.
